- To make a concrete test cylinder according to asmc 31, you will need a cylinder mold, a scoop, a mallet, a 5/8 inch diameter tamping rod with a hemispherical end, and a lid. Fill the mold in three equal layers, using a scoop to place concrete in the mold and rod each layer 25 times. Tap the outside of the mold 10 to 15 times with a mallet to close voids. For the second layer, fill the mold another third, rod it 25 times, tap the outside, and slightly overfill. Rod the last layer, tap the outside, strike off excess concrete, clean the top edge, place the lid on the mold, label it, and move it to its initial curing location.
